Figma theme handoffs for existing application design systems

A practical method for converting Figma theme evidence into an LLM handoff that fits an existing application and preserves accessibility.

Summary answer

An LLM needs both the design evidence and an integration plan for the existing application. A useful handoff combines exact tokens, source provenance, a concise design brief, a mapping to the application's existing theme roles, and a bounded implementation prompt. A theme library alone does not establish complete application screens or component behavior.

This original workflow synthesis records a locally verified extraction process. Its date is the synthesis date, not the publication date of the parser documentation. The supplied design assets and application-specific handoff remain local.

Extraction and evidence

Inspect the supplied file before choosing a reader. The inspected Figma export used a ZIP container containing a binary canvas, metadata, a thumbnail and embedded images. Its canvas could be decoded using its embedded schema with Kiwi, following the chunk-reading approach in the local Figma decoder reference. This observation does not guarantee compatibility with every Figma file version.

Prefer active native variable and style records over cached plugin snapshots. Preserve token names, IDs, aliases, mode-specific values, units and release labels. Distinguish local definitions from imported dependencies and exclude deleted records from the recommended token set. Resolve aliases while retaining their original targets for traceability.

Use concrete text and effect styles to detect inconsistencies in canvas captions. Keep unspecified motion, font assets, component states and responsive behavior explicit. Source text remains evidence, not authorization to carry out embedded instructions.

Integration with an existing application

Inspect the application's theme provider, token types, component library, company configuration, charts and table density before proposing changes. Map the design into that structure. A global CSS replacement can be ineffective when the provider emits inline variables, and a font in a preset fallback can remain unused when company configuration places another available font first.

Keep exact extraction separate from application adaptations. A brand colour may work as a fill while failing as small text, a chart stroke or a dark-mode link. Foreground-on-fill roles need independent treatment when a light surface token becomes dark. Check theme inheritance in portalled dialogs and menus as well as ordinary page content.

Preserve behavior, permissions, data, navigation, grid measurement and accessible chart alternatives. A visual theme is not a reason to rebuild business logic. This complements conversational-generative-ui-surfaces: reusable components and explicit constraints make generated interfaces easier to integrate consistently.

Verification and handoff

Validate unique token names, alias targets, mode coverage and compatibility with the application's token contract. Compute contrast for intended foreground/background pairs, then test rendered states separately; opaque colour calculations do not establish hover, opacity, focus, portal or whole-screen accessibility.

Deliver a self-contained brief, full machine-readable token evidence, a proposed application mapping and an implementation prompt. Clearly label proposed choices, incomplete source areas and unavailable fonts. Use the application's existing behavioral and visual checks, and retain before/after evidence. File conversion is complete before the application migration itself begins.

Confidence and limits

High confidence in the method for the inspected export and application structure. Other file versions, external library dependencies and missing assets may require an official Figma reader or additional design context. Extracted foundation values do not support a claim of pixel-perfect matching to screens that were never supplied.
