I've been building Selfcoder, a VS Code coding agent focused specifically on local models. I originally started working on it because I was frustrated with the context management when using local models through the native Copilot Chat. I often felt that the model either wasn't getting the context it actually needed or that too much irrelevant context was being included, which led to pretty poor results with smaller local models. So a big part of Selfcoder is built around managing context more deliberately for local LLMs, selecting relevant workspace context while trying not to waste a limited context window. It supports Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM as backend providers and Opencode as agent layer. It can investigate the codebase, edit files and run commands. If you looking for local focused copilot alternative, you can look on it and I'd really like to get some feedback. https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=coderoom.Selfcoder submitted by /u/spellsingerka [link] [comments]
