Most people building AI agents don't realize this until it's too late. Your agent's memory isn't a feature. It's your moat. 1. Closed harness = they own your memory 2. Switch models → lose all context, preferences, history 3. Proprietary compaction (OpenAI Codex) = encrypted, not portable 4. Open harness = you own the data flywheel My memory lives in markdown files on GitHub. Claude Code reads it. OpenClaw reads it. Not locked to either. Not locked to any platform. I switch tools, swap models - memory stays mine. That's the only way to build.
