The cancelation of the Grace Hopper Conference may actually point to a reduction in overall junior-level recruitment and job growth. I spoke about AI at GHC 2018, and it was 20,000+ attendees, majority women, with the booth activity largely for recruitment (boothers were engineers and recruiters, with informational interviews on-site). According to all my photos, the sponsors/booths in 2018 included the following (and I am lightly inferring they have reduced their junior hiring): Nike, IBM, Cisco, Nvidia, Dell, Amazon, Intuit, Google, Oracle, Northwestern Mutual, Intel, Accenture, Honeywell, American Express, Foursquare, Classpass, Plaid, Coinbase, Splunk, Squarespace, JPMorgan Chase, Clover, Netflix, PwC, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Meta (Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp), Accenture, Workday, Western Digital, Two Sigma, Juniper Networks, BBVA, Publicis Sapient, Expedia, eBay, Walmart, Target. The cancelation is disappointing. The panel I did was how to become an AI Product Manager. Think how ahead of its time that was, knowing what comes just four years later. My panelmates and I have all changed jobs. We are now: senior director in AI at Nvidia, engineering manager at Google AI, applied AI at OpenAI, advising F500 companies in AI (me), and building cool products out of at an AI studio.
