Databricks has announced that its support for Apache Iceberg v3 is now in Public Preview (available in Databricks Runtime 18.0 and above), introducing key capabilities including Deletion Vectors, Row Lineage, and the VARIANT data type for semi-structured data — delivering data manipulation performance up to 10x faster than the traditional copy-on-write approach. These features are natively supported in Unity Catalog managed Iceberg tables and further unify the data layer between Iceberg and Delta Lake, eliminating the need to rewrite data when building interoperable pipelines. Customers can leverage Delta Lake with UniForm to write once and read as Iceberg from engines such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Athena, and Trino, enabling a single copy of data to serve every engine in their stack.
