Sam Morrow, a Senior Software Engineer at GitHub on the Copilot Agent Services team, spoke at the ai.engineer conference about the challenges of building and scaling the GitHub MCP Server — an open-source Model Context Protocol server that provides AI agents seamless integration with the GitHub platform. What began as a fun side project with a couple of colleagues quickly gained over 10,000 GitHub stars in a week, giving it enormous momentum that led to thousands of forks and ultimately became Morrow's primary focus at work. Key engineering challenges discussed include managing a growing suite of over 100 tools via composable "toolsets," experimenting with dynamic tool selection using embeddings, and improving error messages for AI agents, since most MCP servers inherit terse, technical CLI-style errors that are difficult for agents to parse — with Morrow advising plain-language explanations and suggested next steps.
