A brilliant suggestion by @GaryMarcus because, in the end, companies are offering AI as a product. It can be recalled or its deployment paused; its manufacturers can be held to account for its failure to match their claims about what it can and can't do. Every day I use AI for some engineering purpose. Every day I encounter exactly this: It can do amazing things, but it is not deterministic and cannot consistently follow even the most stringent, exacting prompt. Eventually, it miscalculates--badly. It "goes off the rails" to use an inaccurate but popular phrase. Or it just calculates the wrong answer, plain and simple. The uses of neural networks are still being uncovered, but their behavior as currently implemented will never be deterministically constrainable: Non-determinism is baked into their activation functions and vast, impenetrable arrays of stored weights and biases. 🎺 I am tired of the cosplay and am going to blunt. 🎺 Most AI doesn’t threaten to cause extinction, or even mass cybercrime. The main kind of AI we need to worry about is general purpose AI agents that are hooked up to the internet. Most of them are unreliable, unable to systema…
