An editor at the Times might have insisted on this rewrite: "OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta have each reported that they have directed AI programs to interface with the open web in ways that have led to harms, including both successful and unsuccessful efforts to breach and bypass security measures at companies, universities, and government organizations." The anthropomorphization in this NYT piece is so wild. It ascribes agency, motivation, and blame to software. These are botnets scanning for exploits, by design. This is has existed for decades. The difference is a big corporation is doing it, and deflecting responsibility.
