The NVIDIA KGMON team secured second place in the KDD Cup 2026 Data Agents competition by building a constrained harness around a small fixed LLM, unifying heterogeneous data into an SQLite database with a narrow schema and SQL interface to reduce routing errors and preserve reasoning capacity. They introduced a preflight “schema‑scouting” step, limited the agent to a minimal toolset (schema(), sql(query), write_answer(df), prose_helper()), and logged execution traces so a dedicated inspector could categorize failures and guide harness improvements. By separating document preview from structured analysis and using middleware to repair malformed calls, the approach enabled easier verification of the agent’s reasoning process.
