Hi all. I've been building Tap, a minimal Windows browser with a built-in assistant called Tappy that runs 100% on Ollama. No API keys, no accounts, no telemetry. What it does Chat about the page you're on, or anything else Decides on its own when it needs fresh info, searches DuckDuckGo, and answers with sources Fact-check mode: a verdict (Supported / Disputed / Mixed / Can't verify / Opinion) plus sources Reads your local PDF, DOCX and XLSX files on-device A floating bubble for quick questions from anywhere in Windows Switch models in the app; a thinking toggle for models that support it Privacy, precisely: the model, your conversations and your files stay on your PC. When Tappy searches, only the search words go to DuckDuckGo, like a normal search. A few things I learned getting small models to behave: Split decide/answer. A 9B model was unreliable at choosing "search or answer?" and answering in one prompt. Two steps (a tiny SEARCH/ANSWER decision, then the answer) made it much more consistent. Keep old sources out of the chat history. Models kept copying previous source lists into new answers and skipping fresh searches. Passing earlier sources as a short system note fixed it. "Opinion" as its own fact-check verdict stops the model from "fact-checking" matters of taste. Setup: if Ollama isn't installed, Tap walks you through it and downloads a model. The default is Qwen 3.5 9B, and any model you already have works. Hardware: Windows 10/11 64-bit, 16 GB RAM recommended, and a GPU helps a lot. On CPU only, pick a smaller model. It's a beta, and it's unsigned (solo dev), so Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" → More info → Run anyway. VirusTotal: 1/69. one AI-heuristic false positive, reported. That's the thing I can't test alone. submitted by /u/paris6969 [link] [comments]
