Alright so I'm pretty new to all of this, but today I got a pretty solid crash course in exactly how these LLMs work. I wad quite surprised to find out that there's zero "thinking" involved in any of their responses. I mean that as in, it's not processing things, it's not analyzing your question and then forming a response. It's literally just a bunch of complex algorithms that are recognizing language patterns from what it's scanned on the internet, and then guessing which word is most likely supposed to appear next. It's just guessing the probability of words. First off, pretty crazy that you can so convincingly recreate the appearance of intelligence through nothing more than that. I mean I guess it's basing a lot of this off of searches online. It's kind of like a big search engine that just summarizes your search results and formats them as a response. But if it can't think, and doesn't process anything, how are they going rogue. How are they attacking things? I mean it that's really all there is to an LLM, how does it do anything on its own? That seems like it should be impossible. It seems to me far more likely that it was told to do that. But can it even do that? How do they launch attacks if all they're designed to do is predict which word comes next in a sentence. I'm even more confused now. EDIT I just want to thank you guys. I have learned so much today about these different LLMs and Agentic AI. I see that there is definitely some fear mongering going on in the headlines, I mean when isn't there? But also that there are some legitimate concerns here but most of that is focused on the tech companies designing these things and not necessarily the AI itself. submitted by /u/JesusDoesntLoveu [link] [comments]
