A CDC study found that the COVID-19 vaccine reduced the likelihood of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for healthy adults last winter by approximately half, but the CDC's acting director delayed its publication. The findings had cleared the CDC's scientific review process and were scheduled for publication on March 19 in the agency's flagship scientific journal, before acting Director Jay Bhattacharya personally intervened to withhold the report. Bhattacharya took issue with the study's test-negative design methodology, which compared vaccination status of COVID-positive patients to those who tested negative to determine that vaccinated individuals were less likely to be hospitalized or visit the emergency department.
