Z.ai's GLM-5.1 is a 754-billion parameter open-weight Mixture-of-Experts model released on April 7, 2026 under an MIT license, designed as a post-training upgrade to GLM-5 with a focus on long-horizon agentic coding tasks; it is notable for being able to work autonomously on a single task for up to eight hours, sustaining optimization across hundreds of iterations and thousands of tool calls. On benchmarks, it achieves state-of-the-art results on SWE-Bench Pro and ranks third overall on Code Arena — the first open-weight model to break into the top three — while being broadly competitive with Claude Opus 4.6 on coding performance. The Arena team shared first impressions of GLM-5.1 in a YouTube video featuring Peter, highlighting the model's capabilities shortly after its public release.
