Hey everyone, I wanted to share a story that changed my perspective on what's possible with modern AI tools, especially for everyday people with no background in software development. My brother Ben has a rare progressive condition called TUBB4A-related leukodystrophy. Over the years, he lost the ability to walk, talk, and use his hands. Today he is non-speaking and quadriplegic, with his only reliable movement being the ability to turn his head left and right. For almost a decade, standard assistive tech didn't fit his needs, and he was largely limited to answering yes or no with his head. After Ben moved in with us, we worked on getting him more tools for communication and access. When I heard that ChatGPT could write code, I wondered if I could use AI to build something Ben would actually want to use. Within about a week, I had a working prototype of a phrase board and a custom interface. Using AI to help write and iterate on the code, we've since built an entire ecosystem of custom apps and games that Ben can control using just two head-mounted buttons: He can browse the web and pick from hundreds of shows and movies by himself. He can send text messages for the first time ever. He can use a real-time conversational suggestion app He can play dozens of custom games, from tic-tac-toe and checkers to mini golf, battleship, and tower defense (and more) We turned this into a nonprofit called NARBE Foundation, through which we donate switch kits like Ben's and develop switch-based tools and games of all kinds, free and open source, through our project SwitchedGames. I'm sharing this because it proves a point we don't talk about enough: you no longer need a computer science degree to make a genuine, profound difference in someone's life. AI has lowered the barrier to entry so much that non-programmers can now build hyper-specific, real-world accessibility solutions from scratch. I also know most people don't have the time or capacity to build something like this themselves. That's why we hope this message spreads far and wide, to reach the people who need it. We release everything for free and open source, but this fall we're also launching a new initiative called "Build for One," where we help families like ours by prototyping bespoke tools that give back some autonomy and a new way to have fun. Thanks for reading, and I hope we can find more people like Ben who can benefit from this technology. submitted by /u/acrolicious [link] [comments]
