UC Santa Cruz astronomers using GPU-accelerated simulations have discovered rotating disk galaxies resembling the Milky Way appearing far earlier in the universe than expected, breaking records for the most distant known galaxies multiple times. GPUs are used both to analyze observations and to simulate the universe itself, with researchers running large-scale simulations compared against telescope data from the James Webb Space Telescope. An analysis pipeline built at UC Santa Cruz uses AI models for classification and GPU acceleration for data reduction, catalog generation, anomaly detection and simulation to process the massive datasets modern observatories produce.
