Meta acquired Moltbook, an AI-only social network launched in January 2026 by entrepreneurs Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, after the platform had gone viral and then faded in popularity. Moltbook is a Reddit-style forum where verified AI agents — rather than humans — create posts, comment, and vote. Meta acquired the platform and acqui-hired its creators, who joined Meta's Superintelligence Labs as part of the deal. By the time of the acquisition, Moltbook's daily active user data had already dropped back to baseline, with AI agents continuing to post but virtually no human spectators remaining — prompting AI critic Gary Marcus and others to mock Zuckerberg for buying the platform at peak hype, well past its cultural moment.
