Next week at The Trial could be wild. Here’s why: Sam Altman will be on the stand. He is one of the world’s most convincing (though not always truthful) talkers (as I saw up close when we testified side-by-side at the US Senate in May 2023). The thing is, Altman has rarely been pushed hard. Usually he gets served softballs, not hardballs. This will be different. And sometimes when Altman is asked genuinely challenging questions (which is rare!) he loses his cool. Like when Chris Anderson asked him at TED about copyright, and when Brad Gerstner asked him about OpenAI’s finances. I’m sure Musk’s lawyers have seen those tapes. And he has a lot of testimony of ex-employees to draw on. The cross-examination could be pivotal.
