Part of me refuses to believe OpenAI fired three safety researchers for political reasons, and wishes instead that it was just a badly executed investigation mixed with paranoia and lack of sleep after a rollercoaster summer. But given that OpenAI continues to not be able to say anything that makes sense to me about our firings and keeps acting adversarially (e.g. claiming to journalists I wasn't on the Hugging Face investigation, while there're a number of people who could confirm otherwise), it's hard to not become cynical. The firings of three OpenAI safety researchers came in the throes of a battle over how to keep AI systems under human control—and who gets to see the secret designs that could determine the winners of the biggest commercial race in history. https://on.wsj.com/48bYPG8
