Despite the U.S. producing a record ~13 million barrels of oil per day, it still imports roughly 6.1 million barrels per day to meet domestic demand, with a portion coming from the Persian Gulf — leaving American consumers exposed to the price spike. The crisis has exposed that consumers remain vulnerable to price spikes despite record domestic production, and experts doubt the disruption will accelerate a clean energy transition without strong policy support.
