AI is generally a weak fiction writer except for one particular kind of fiction (metaphor-rich, staccato sentences, short & plot light, etc.) which it writes excellently. This happens to be a style th

If AI self-improvement, even in a very limited way, is possible, the cadence of shipping both AI products/harnesses & models should go up. This appears to be happening at Anthropic & OpenAI, but not f

I suspect that companies underestimate the value of using higher intelligence for tasks where weaker AIs seem to be good enough to hit KPIs at a lower price. At least build architectures where you can

This was perhaps the most controversial aspect of the guardrails around Fable, now being rolled back. Very pleased to hear Anthropic have walked back this policy https://simonwillison.net/2026/Jun/11/

One thing I mentioned only in passing in my Fable post is that, for long running tasks, Fable starts to develop its own dialect as its many agents and tasks reinforce themselves and make Claudish lang

The fact that Anthropic may take away subscription access to Fable in two weeks is weird & discourages investing in learning about the model. Subscription use is how you figure out what the model is g

One reason you want AIs to be better writers is that there is a lot of writing even in software, and it is incredibly painful to hit a menu which is filled with Claudisms or ChatGPTish phrases. A repo

Also, a lot depends on Chinese labs continuing to ship open weights models. If they stop, the frontier falls further and further behind to those who want to use local/fine-tuned models. I think this i

At least until (if?) rapid improvement stops, it seems less likely someone is going to catch the Big Three AI Labs. Microsoft and Meta released their models, which were fine, but not frontier. SpaceX

A real problem with feeling the acceleration viscerally is that current models are really good and it is hard to feel the vibe difference on most individual tasks with new models, even as AIs continue
