Disable auto-play and infinite scroll or risk massive fines, EU tells Meta

The European Union ordered Meta to disable "addictive design" elements like infinite scroll and autoplay videos on Facebook and Instagram, or face large fines under the Digital Services Act. The Commission found Meta did not adequately assess the risks of these features on physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for minors and vulnerable adults, and is demanding design changes including disabling autoplay and infinite scroll by default, implementing screen time breaks, and altering personalized recommendations. If the Commission's findings are confirmed, Meta faces a fine of up to 6% of its total global annual turnover.
