IBM agreed to pay $17,077,043 to the U.S. government on April 10, 2026, to resolve DOJ allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by falsely certifying compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws while maintaining race- and sex-based hiring and promotion practices under its DEI program. The settlement marks the first resolution secured under the DOJ's Civil Rights Fraud Initiative, launched in May 2025, which uses the False Claims Act to enforce civil rights laws where federal funding is involved. IBM denied that it had discriminatory or illegal DEI practices, and the settlement does not constitute an admission of liability.
