The Trump administration has ordered Reddit to appear before a secret grand jury in Washington, D.C., demanding the personal data of an anonymous user who criticized ICE online, with a compliance deadline of April 14. The grand jury subpoena was issued by federal prosecutors after ICE's earlier effort to identify the same user failed in a Northern California federal court. Attorneys for the Reddit user argue their client's posts and anonymity are protected under the First Amendment, calling ICE's use of a grand jury a disturbing escalation after its previous attempts to investigate political speech were quashed in court. Reddit has not identified the user, and Reddit's own attorneys reviewed the user's posts for any speech not protected by the First Amendment and found none.
