James Strahler II of Columbus, Ohio became the first person convicted under the Take It Down Act — a federal law criminalizing the posting of nonconsensual explicit imagery, including AI-generated deepfakes — signed by President Trump in May 2025. After being charged and released following an initial arrest, Strahler continued his conduct, with the same victim contacting police again three months later after receiving similar harassing messages from an unknown number. He ultimately pleaded guilty to cyberstalking, producing obscene visuals of child sexual abuse material, and publishing digital forgeries , with investigators finding more than 24 AI platforms and over 100 AI web-based models installed on his phone.
