A father named Brady Frey discovered that his 12-year-old daughter had falsely registered her Discord account as 18+; he only found out after her account was hacked and he became trapped in a spiraling support nightmare while trying to stop the hacker from targeting dozens of her young friends with financial extortion scams. Discord informed him that there is currently no way to "change the status of a Discord account if it was created as 18+," blocking his ability to enroll her under parental controls via Discord's Family Center. The ordeal stretched for more than four weeks of back-and-forth, and Frey later confirmed through a data request that Discord had internally labeled his daughter as a teen days before the hack occurred — underscoring the platform's gaps in enforcing age-appropriate protections even when it has relevant information.
