Microsoft overhauled the Windows Insider Program in April 2026, consolidating its previously confusing multi-channel structure into two primary channels — Experimental (replacing Dev and Canary) and Beta — to set clearer expectations about build stability and feature availability. The Beta channel now guarantees that any announced feature included in an update will be immediately present on a tester's device, eliminating the frustrating "Controlled Feature Rollout" lottery, while the Experimental channel introduces manual Feature Flags so users can toggle specific new features on or off. Additionally, Microsoft enabled in-place upgrades (IPU) to allow testers to switch between channels — or exit the program entirely — without requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows, significantly lowering the barrier to participation.
