While El Niño events are naturally temporary phenomena lasting 12 to 18 months, researchers warn that climate impacts from this cycle may be persistent, as the additional heat and altered atmospheric patterns could accelerate ice sheet melting, disrupt ocean currents, and trigger cascading environmental changes that persist long after the Pacific returns to normal conditions.
