GPT-Red: Unlocking Self-Improvement for Robustness
OpenAI’s GPT-Red is an automated red-teaming model trained via self-play; GPT-5.6 Sol shows 6× fewer hard prompt-injection failures.
GPT-Red: Unlocking Self-Improvement for Robustness
What was released
OpenAI describes GPT-Red, its current best automated, internal-only safety red-teaming model. It crafts iterative attacks against GPT models (prompt → observe → revise), generating adversarial data for training at a scale human red-teaming cannot match.
Key findings
- Human red-teaming does not produce enough volume/diversity of attacks for training-time robustness.
- GPT-Red is trained with self-play RL against diverse defender LLMs, at compute scale comparable to large post-training runs—dedicated to safety.
- Incorporated into production training: GPT-5.6 Sol is described as most robust to prompt injections to date, with 6× fewer failures on OpenAI’s hardest direct prompt-injection benchmark vs the best production model from four months earlier.
Why it matters
Frames safety as a self-improvement loop (attacker model ↔ production model) rather than a static eval checklist—central as tool-using agents face more third-party prompt-injection surfaces.
