The 'Alignment Tax' is ruining agentic workflows. Anyone else noticing 'Complexity Theater' in recent models?

Been building some multi-agent pipelines recently and the degradation in direct execution is insane. Whenever I pass a strict operational variable or hypothesis, the LLM triggers this 'Devil's Advocate' subroutine, adding 3 paragraphs of academic nuance just to sound smart, before outputting the exact same generic result. I call it Complexity Theater. It's a direct result of aggressive RLHF. They are penalizing direct compliance and rewarding verbose hedging, creating a massive Alignment Tax in latent space compute. Wrote a quick technical post-mortem on how to bypass this using Axiomatic Locking (forcing the model to treat user premises as physical laws to bypass the nuance layers). Post-mortem and topology framework here: [https://medium.com/@gundala.sipetir/the-alignment-tax-why-modern-llms-choose-complexity-theater-over-direct-execution-d27be9c87f64?postPublishedType=initial] Curious if anyone else has found reliable system prompts to kill this alignment tax without breaking the model's core reasoning capabilities? submitted by /u/umbra_sovereign [link] [comments]
