After banning foreign routers, FCC says existing ones can get updates until 2029

The FCC extended its deadline for software updates on foreign-made routers from March 1, 2027, to January 1, 2029 , allowing already-authorized devices to receive critical security patches longer despite the ban on new foreign router approvals. Cybersecurity experts and industry associations had urged the FCC to reconsider the update cutoff, warning that unsupported hardware would be vulnerable to cyberattacks . The FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology recommended formalizing these waivers through a rulemaking process, raising the possibility they could be extended beyond 2029 .
