What is Astra actually supposed to be better at, Because if the answer is “everything,” then I genuinely do not understand what kind of testing was done for writing-heavy use cases. My biggest issue is instruction following. I can explain exactly what I want, repeat it, provide examples, specify what should not be changed, define the tone, structure, formatting, and scope, and Astra still regularly ignores those instructions and produces something completely different. For example: DO NOT do X. DO Y. And somehow, a few messages later, it still does X. At that point, what is the purpose of custom instructions, project instructions, memory, Work instructions, or a large context window if the model repeatedly overrides extremely clear user direction? I also use ChatGPT professionally for documentation and writing work, and Astra is frustrating there too. If I ask it to change only specific words, it may rewrite entire sentences. If I ask it to preserve the structure, it changes the structure. If I specify exact formatting, exact wording changes, red font, a particular tone, or very narrow editorial scope, it still frequently ignores those constraints. That makes me wonder how much OpenAI actually tests these models with people whose work is primarily language-focused. There is a lot of emphasis on coding, math, reasoning benchmarks, agents, and technical tasks, but what about technical writers, documentation specialists, marketers, editors, copywriters, researchers, humanities professionals, and people who use ChatGPT primarily for writing? These are not niche use cases. Writing is one of the most obvious reasons people use a language model in the first place. Astra may be excellent on technical benchmarks, but for writing it feels noticeably worse: worse instruction following, worse tone control, worse character voice, worse editing discipline, and much more aggressive sanitization. I have a Pro account and tested it both in normal Chat and in Work mode, with detailed instructions and plenty of context. The problem is not that I gave it a vague prompt. Astra often feels like I am giving extremely detailed instructions through soundproof glass while the model politely acknowledges them and then writes exactly what I asked it not to write. I really wish OpenAI would treat writing quality, editorial precision, creativity, tone control, and instruction adherence as seriously as coding and benchmark performance. submitted by /u/Different-Mess4248 [link] [comments]
