California's AB 1921 (Protect Our Games Act), introduced in February 2026, would require publishers to take responsibility for the long-term playability of online games. The bill passed a key hurdle on May 14 when the California State Assembly Appropriations Committee voted to move it forward. Games released after January 1, 2027, would need to be patched for offline play when servers shut down, or consumers would receive full refunds.
