Chaos erupts as cyberattack disrupts learning platform Canvas amid finals

A cyberattack shut down Canvas, an education platform used by universities and K-12 schools across the US on May 7, 2026, depriving students and teachers of essential classroom materials during final exams. The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach, threatening to release sensitive data including names, email addresses, and student ID numbers unless ransom demands were met by May 12. Canvas was restored to full availability by May 8, 2026 after Instructure shut down its Free-For-Teacher accounts to contain the breach.
