Ebola outbreak now third largest recorded and 'spreading rapidly'

A May 2026 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda involves the rare Bundibugyo virus , with 575 suspected cases, 51 confirmed cases, and 148 suspected deaths reported as of May 21 . The outbreak is showing a potentially much larger scale than currently detected, with increasing trends in suspected cases and clusters of deaths . There is no vaccine for Bundibugyo virus, and previous outbreaks have had death rates of 25% to 50% .
