NASA is advancing its Artemis program to build a crewed lunar base over the next decade near the lunar south pole , and the base will sprawl over hundreds of square miles with a perimeter marked by hopping "MoonFall" drones stationed at the corners . NASA awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to four U.S. companies including Blue Origin, Astrolab, Lunar Outpost, and Firefly Aerospace to deliver the necessary landers, rovers, and drones for the moon base's construction.
