AI critic and cognitive scientist Gary Marcus publicly challenged the economic rationale behind Project Stargate, the Trump-announced $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative, arguing that the math behind major generative AI investments simply "didn't make sense" given that leading AI companies like OpenAI were operating at significant losses. Marcus predicted that large AI infrastructure plays like Stargate would ultimately prove to be "an unprofitable and underused mistake," consistent with his broader view that generative AI's economics are fundamentally flawed. His skepticism was part of a wider pattern of criticism in which he questioned whether the financial and technical foundations of the current AI boom could support the enormous capital commitments being made.
