Texas AG sues Meta over claims that WhatsApp doesn't provide end-to-end encryption

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed suit on May 21, 2026, accusing Meta and WhatsApp of misleading millions of users about the privacy of WhatsApp chats. The lawsuit alleges WhatsApp deceives users by claiming to offer end-to-end encryption when only the sender and receiver can access messages. Paxton's office argues Meta allegedly stored WhatsApp messages in unencrypted form and allowed some employees and contractors to view them via internal systems.
