The great American data center divide

The expansion of AI infrastructure across the United States has sparked significant debate between urban and rural areas, with large tech companies and the federal government advocating for data center development while many rural communities remain staunchly opposed. As the federal government pushes for AI development citing economic growth potential, rural communities fear that data centers could disrupt local ecosystems, compromise privacy, and exacerbate economic inequalities. $18 billion worth of data center projects were blocked and another $46 billion delayed over the last two years amid resident and activist group opposition.
