Span, Nvidia, and PulteGroup are testing home-based data center nodes that use unused grid capacity to cut costs, ease community pushback, and support growing AI demand. The Span installation bundles a smart electrical panel, an XFRA unit, a backup battery, and sometimes solar panels, with homeowners paying a flat fee for power and Wi-Fi while receiving compensation based on energy and network use. Home data centers are far more likely to become a niche layer of future infrastructure than a replacement for hyperscale data centers given the limitations.
