A study from the American Lung Association found that if the U.S. transitions to a 100% zero-emission passenger vehicle fleet by 2050, it would result in 89,300 fewer premature deaths and $978 billion in public health benefits. Research shows that achieving 100% EV sales by 2040 would enable a 90% reduction in petroleum demand and greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The health gains stem primarily from eliminating air pollution caused by combustion engine vehicles.
