Russia's co-orbital anti-satellite system, known as the Nivelir system, can deploy so-called nesting doll sub-satellites for inspection or kinetic kills. The U.S. assesses that Russia has launched counterspace weapons into low Earth orbit positioned in the same orbit as U.S. government satellites. U.S. Space Command warned the U.S. is "very concerned" that Russia may be developing a nuclear weapon in space to target satellites, which could disrupt global communications, GPS systems and daily life on Earth.
