Towards passive heart health monitoring via smartphone camera

Google Research developed PHRM, a deep-learning system that uses facial video-based photoplethysmography to passively measure heart rate and resting heart rate during everyday smartphone use . The system achieved less than 10% error for heart rate measurements across different skin tones and less than 5 beats-per-minute error for daily resting heart rate compared to wearable trackers . The researchers emphasized privacy protections and secure on-device processing, as the system involves passive facial video capture .
