Chemical accidents involving releases of dangerous chemicals rose 57 percent between 2021 and 2025, from 83 to 131 incidents , with injuries or deaths rising from 60 to 89 over the same period . The EPA proposed in February 2026 to rescind or significantly scale back requirements introduced by the 2024 Safer Communities by Chemical Accident Prevention rule , and the Trump administration has also attempted to eliminate the Chemical Safety Board by withholding funding .
