ArXiv will ban authors for one year if they submit papers containing obviously AI-generated content , with examples including hallucinated citations, placeholder text, or chatbot meta-comments left in manuscripts . After the one-year ban, subsequent submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue . The policy arrives as hallucinated citations have risen tenfold since 2023, reaching 1 in every 277 papers in early 2026 .
