NASA's Artemis II mission — a nine-day lunar flyby that launched on April 1, 2026 — was the first crewed flight of the Artemis program and the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew consisted of commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Canadian Space Agency mission specialist Jeremy Hansen. During the lunar flyby, the crew surpassed the record for the farthest humans have ever traveled in space, besting the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by over 4,000 miles, reaching approximately 252,756 miles from Earth, before splashing down on April 10 after their 10-day trip around the Moon.
